About Leonard Cheshire Disability

Their 6,400 staff and around 3,000 volunteers support more than 30,000 disabled people in the UK and around the world with a diverse portfolio of services and programmes.

Leonard Cheshire is a major UK social care provider, operating a network of 163 supported living, residential, nursing and day centre facilities throughout the UK. They partner with young disabled people and other organisations to develop individual skills and confidence and promote learning, work experience, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. They are also a specialist international development charity delivering inclusive education and access to livelihoods programmes in 13 countries across Asia and Africa.

In March 2017 with their renewed purpose of radically improving the life choices of people with disabilities the Board of Trustees approved a new strategy which articulates the Charity's aim to support journeys toward independence

Role specification

The Trustee Board is responsible for setting the strategic aims, objectives and direction of the charity, delegating day to day management to an Executive Team led by a Chief Executive. It meets four times a year plus one weekend away.

 

Requirements for this role include:

  • Experience of disability: Personal experience of disability and a strong commitment to disability equality and how this impacts on the quality of life and life choices for disabled people
  • Understanding of the context in which Leonard Cheshire Disability works and a commitment to its values
  • Willingness to actively engage with contacts to further the charity’s goals, to fundraise and to make new links for the charity
  • Previous experience of working collaboratively as part of a team and collective decision making that requires an understanding of commercial and non-commercial issues
  • The intellectual capacity to grasp issues outside personal experience and the ability to contribute to high level strategy development
  • A good communicator with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to both empower and challenge supportively
  • Understanding of and commitment to equality and diversity
  • Informed leadership to enable us to deliver our agenda of working with an increasingly high-dependency group whilst maximising opportunities for independent living
  • Sound independent judgement, ideally as part of a board
  • Professional or relevant commercial or business related experience and/or the ability to demonstrate the necessary skills needed to support the charity’s professional and commercial interests
  • Time and enthusiasm to dedicate to the role of Trustee
  • An understanding and acceptance, of the governance, responsibility and liabilities of membership of Leonard Cheshire Disability

Time commitment

Being a Trustee of a large and complex charity means a substantial commitment in terms of time. The key points that are highlighted below should not be underestimated, and candidates should bear in mind that all Trustees are expected to take part in committee work.

Preparing for board and committee meetings, as well as the necessary ad hoc unplanned events that inevitably crop up, require time and effort in addition to the formally planned events noted as follows:

  • Three Quarterly Board meetings held in London
  • One Board meeting per annum held in one of the four nations
  • Sub-committee meetings where appropriate
  • An annual residential Trustee development/strategy weekend
  • An annual one to one meeting with the Chair
  • Attend events in London and across the UK, where appropriate
