​Black Cultural Archives (BCA) is the home of Black British history, and one of the most significant cultural institutions in the UK. Their mission is to collect, preserve and celebrate the histories of people of African and Caribbean descent in the UK and to inspire and give strength to individuals, communities, and society. Over more than four decades, BCA have welcomed and supported leading activists, scholars, teachers, authors, broadcasters, and artists, as well as schoolchildren, students, and those who simply want to celebrate and explore Black history.  

Today, BCA’s work as a beacon of Black cultural heritage, as well as a resource for community healing and social progress, remains as vital as ever. They exemplify Black British creativity and ambition. In 2023, their Board approved a new business plan and fundraising strategy, and confirmed Lisa Anderson as the new permanent Managing Director. As they celebrate their 10th birthday at 1 Windrush Square, they are looking forward to a bright future at the heart of an ever more confident conversation about what it is to be Black and British.  

BCA are now inviting applications to become the next Chair of their Board of Trustees. It’s an unbeatable opportunity for a dynamic, resourceful and inclusive-minded person to make a once-in a generation contribution to BCA’s mission. You’ll leverage the considerable strengths of our expert and respected Board, and ensure that it realises its potential to change the conversation. And you’ll work alongside the Managing Director to consolidate their recent strategic progress, leading them into a new decade which will be characterised by impact, financial sustainability and organisational resilience. 

We want to meet candidates with extensive strategic and practical leadership experience, an impressive professional network, and a comprehensive understanding of best practice in governance. A working knowledge of public and grant funding within the cultural sector would be a distinct advantage. You must share a passion for this unique African and Caribbean heritage organisation, with its distinctive mission to promote Black British History, and have a strong personal commitment to achieving social progress and change.
