Salary £170,000

Job description

The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) is an independent healthcare charity and the leading specialists of abortion advice and treatment in the UK. For more than 55 years, we have advocated and cared for women and couples who decide to end a pregnancy. We offer abortion advice and treatment, pregnancy testing, counselling, Sexually Transmitted Infection screening, contraception, and vasectomy through our network of reproductive healthcare centres. Each year, over 100,000 women receive care in one of our 55 reproductive healthcare clinics nationwide.

Rapid growth over the past three years means that BPAS now performs nearly half of the UK’s abortions. We have introduced ground-breaking changes in service delivery, including our award-winning telemedical abortion service, and have risen to the challenge of the increase in women’s needs during the pandemic and the cost of living crisis that followed. Having restored the organisation to financial sustainability through an ambitious and successful post-Covid recovery plan in 2022/2023, we now have firm foundations on which to build the next phase of our development, and ensure that we are fit for the future.

Our new Chief Executive will therefore join us at a hugely exciting point. As well as completing and consolidating the process of organisational renewal, you’ll also lead the development of our new strategic plan. We believe it’s an outstanding opportunity to influence and shape the provision of reproductive healthcare, and we are committed to achieving progressive policy reform that will benefit millions of women.

This is a full-spectrum Chief Executive role, so you should be able to quickly master a brief that includes finance, estates, governance, fundraising and advocacy. However, we are fundamentally a healthcare provision charity, so experience of running a comparable service would be a distinct advantage, as would a detailed practical understanding of the regulatory framework in which we operate.

Strong candidates will additionally have a sophisticated grasp of how online strategy will continue to transform our work, plus relevant direct experience of channel-shift and digital product development. An outstanding networker, with the appetite and skillset to become a go-to public voice on a range of issues around women’s rights, you will relish the opportunity to lead an organisation with limitless potential, and a collective hunger to make the world a better place. And it goes without saying that you must share our unshakeable commitment to a woman’s right to choose abortion.
