Job description

The Africa Centre is a unique space which educates about, connects to and advocates for Africa and its diaspora. For over 60 years, they’ve raised awareness in the UK – and beyond – about African and diaspora affairs.

They promote and support contemporary Africa and its diaspora in all its rich diversity, through arts and culture, thought leadership and education. They're now based in a stunning newly refurbished multi-purpose venue in the heart of Southwark, which is also home to one of the largest African communities in the UK. Their vision is that whether you’re looking for a home away from home, rich in African culture, heritage, and community; or you want an incredible night out, where the very best of Africa’s artists and performers are to be found in an intimate setting; or you’re seeking more knowledge and information about Africa and its global diaspora, The Africa Centre is the place to go.

With an exceptional legacy, a wonderful new home, a strong board of trustees and an ambitious international vision, The Africa Centre is ready for someone who can lead them from the front. You’ll exemplify contemporary African energy, build amazing relationships, increase our reach and reputation, and widen our influence across London, the UK and the continent. Equally comfortable talking to poets, sculptors, and influencers, visiting politicians, or the partners of a global consultancy firm, you’ll quickly grasp their huge potential and set to work finding the many and varied practical ways to realise it.

You’ll bring a history of successful and inspiring leadership within a high-performing charity, social enterprise, or the private sector, with sound experience of business and strategic planning. Experience of venue management and artistic programming would be a distinct advantage, and an understanding of income generation is vital. Just as important will be an entrepreneurial and engaging personal style, open to new opportunities and always aiming to generate more than the sum of the parts. But an equal level of rigour and skill is needed when it comes to finance, budgets, governance, and the statutory aspects of charity leadership; you need to have the eye for detail and the organisational nous to keep them on the right side of the regulators.

Able to work collaboratively and productively with a passionate and commercially minded group of trustees, you’ll be creative, innovative and a magpie of good ideas. You’ll share their passion for and commitment to not only the continent, but also to the many Africas in the diaspora, and you’ll relish the opportunity to create the most exciting cultural destination in London.
