The Trussell Trust is an amazing place to work – but we wish it didn’t have to exist, because we don’t believe that a charity like ours should be needed at all. Unfortunately, we have seen demand double over the past three years, as a result of both the pandemic and subsequent economic circumstances. Despite our best efforts, foodbank use is soaring – and the range of need goes far beyond food to include a variety of other essential goods and support. However, the increased visibility and awareness of the issue mean that public goodwill, support and our profile are all considerably higher than they have been in the past.

We bring a unique mix of insight to bear on our mission to end the need for food banks, and powerful evidence about the impact of our programmes is a crucial factor informing both our own investment and operations and how we influence government and other organisations to take action. This role will lead the organisation’s approach to impact measurement and evaluation. You’ll lead a team of specialists and commissioned researchers carrying out evaluations of our programmes on the ground, developing insights to inform our external influence and policy work, and fostering an organisation-wide culture that embraces the use of outcome frameworks and performance indicators across the board, so that we can generate even more actionable insight and create new partnerships of purpose.

We’re looking for a proven expert in evaluation, with a comprehensive methodological grounding and extensive experience in a comparable role. You’ll be the organisational lead on what works, guiding our highly motivated team in how to select and tailor evaluative tools, as well as advising on potential methodological risks and solutions. Able to balance competing priorities and understand the vital importance of flexibility, you’ll be an excellent communicator and system thinker. Your career to date may have included local, devolved or central government, research agencies, higher education, or a combination – what’s most important is that you perceive the enormous potential of our unique ‘research-try-evaluate-share’ approach, and that you profoundly want to play your part in building a country where foodbanks are no longer needed.

We actively encourage applications from under-represented groups such as returning parents or carers who are re-entering work after a career break, people who are LGBTQIA+, from racially minoritized communities such as Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, who have a faith other than Christianity or none, with a disability, impairment, learning difference or long-term condition, with caring responsibilities, from different nations and regions and those with a lived experience of poverty as well as any other under-represented group in our workforce. We are committed to ensuring the safety and protection of our employees from all forms of harm.
