Job description
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides life-saving emergency relief and longer-term medical care to some of the most vulnerable and excluded communities around the world. As an independent medical humanitarian organisation, they deliver care based only on need, regardless of ethnic origin, gender, religion or political affiliation. The majority of their income comes from individuals and private organisations, which gives them a rare freedom to respond where needs are greatest and to speak out publicly, free from any political interference.
MSF UK is part of an international movement of independent entities, commonly referred to as MSF, which are bound by their shared name and identity and shared commitment to the MSF Charter and its principles. MSF UK provides support for MSF’s medical humanitarian programmes. They provide specialist medical expertise, work to increase awareness of MSF’s actions, advocate for change on medical humanitarian issues, recruit internationally mobile staff and crucially, build relationships with it's supporters and raise funds for their humanitarian programmes. The UK Fundraising Department is around 35 to 40 staff covering Philanthropy, Individual Giving and Fundraising Operations and raises significant private income for MSF’s international projects with a small percentage spent in the UK to cover essential running costs.
MSF want to appoint an outstanding Director of Fundraising to build on their impressive track record and set new ambitious goals. While the fundamentals of independence and a needs-driven approach are as important as ever, their recently adopted global fundraising strategic framework opens up exciting new possibilities for innovation and diversification. Working closely with senior colleagues including the Executive Director and Director of Finance, you’ll understand how to balance those twin elements – maintaining a dedicated focus on the wonderful private individuals and organisations who support MSF's unchanged commitment to global solidarity and trust MSF to use their gifts wisely, as well as leading the organisation to engage with new audiences who present different patterns of giving. You’ll ensure MSF remain an exemplar of effective fundraising practice, stewardship and integrity.
Candidates will bring an exceptional professional track record and aptitude for people leadership, underpinned by a personal commitment to the work that MSF does and to their philosophy of humanitarian action. Knowledgeable but always curious, experienced but never hidebound, you’ll have a distinctive energy, creativity, and optimism. Your toolkit of technical skills – analysis, data, communications, influence – must be comprehensive, and strong candidates will additionally bring an in-depth knowledge of relevant legislation and regulation, including data protection and taxation.
