Job description
Systemic Justice is a unique human rights NGO that sees the world differently. They work to radically transform how the law works for communities fighting for racial, social, and economic justice. Because they believe that those most impacted by systemic injustice should be at the centre of judicial remedy, Systemic Justice partner with communities to co-create and co-implement litigation strategies, and litigate cases that challenge the structures perpetuating inequality, injustice and harm. You could call it an applied philosophy of law.
Their first four years have seen remarkable impact, and steady growth to a current annual budget of nearly €2m, so they are facing the future with confidence. Now they’re looking for a new Executive Director to build on the solid achievements of their founder, Nani Jansen Reventlow, and take Systemic Justice to the next level of reach, influence and impact.
What does this look like in practice? You’ll be joining an international organisation which already has a clear, compelling articulation of strategic aims, a proven and effective operating model, and a committed and highly expert team of colleagues. The task is to develop and scale this ground-breaking and visionary organisation to achieve its full potential for social change.
We’re looking for an unusual combination of teambuilder, strategist, communicator and ambassador, entrepreneur and facilitator. You will bring a track record of building and leading a globally-diverse team, plus the development of an anti-oppressive and just organisational culture. More, you’ll have experience of supporting radical visions and strategies for change, and working steadily and creatively to realise them. It’s not essential that you have a background in law – in some ways, a traditional conception of legal practice could even make it difficult for you to embrace Systemic Justice’s approach – but you should understand the concept of strategic litigation and understand the power (and limitations) of the judicial system as a locus for transformative social justice work.
Their work is rooted in foundational values of anti-oppression, intersectionality, and justice. Systemic Justice strongly encourages applications from people with lived experience of the injustices we work to address, as well as people who examine their unconscious bias and take responsibility for creating diverse, equitable, inclusive work environments. We invite anyone who does not have lived experience with systems of oppression to reflect on your suitability for this role, and (if you choose to apply) to address this at the outset.
