Job description
The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) is an independent healthcare charity and the leading specialists of abortion advice and treatment in the UK. For more than 55 years, they have advocated and cared for women and couples who decide to end a pregnancy. They offer abortion advice and treatment, pregnancy testing, counselling, Sexually Transmitted Infection screening, contraception, and vasectomy through its network of reproductive healthcare centres. Each year, over 100,000 women receive care in one of their 55 reproductive healthcare clinics nationwide.
Rapid growth over the past three years means that BPAS now performs nearly half of the UK’s abortions. They have introduced ground-breaking changes in service delivery, including their award-winning telemedical abortion service, and have risen to the challenge of the increase in women’s needs during the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis that followed. Having restored the organisation to financial sustainability through an ambitious and successful post-Covid recovery plan in 2022/2023, they now have firm foundations on which to build the next phase of development and ensure that they are fit for the future.
Board renewal cycle means that BPAS will soon have an opportunity to contribute to their vital work as a Trustee. The board of Trustees holds ultimate responsibility for ensuring BPAS fulfils its organisational and charitable purpose through effective leadership which demonstrates honesty, openness, and integrity. The board focuses on strategy, decision making, risk management and control, supported by a number of committees which oversee clinical and corporate governance.
We warmly invite interest from candidates with a finance background who will be able to provide advice and scrutiny on financial reporting, risk management and internal control, as well as internal and external audit. A financial qualification (e.g. chartered accountancy status or similar) is key, along with an understanding of board level governance and experience of holding senior leadership roles. This experience and understanding could have been gained within the public, private, third or advisory sectors.
