Salary £90,000 - £95,000

Job description

The British Red Cross are the world’s emergency responders, and their team in the UK have been integral to all major emergencies within the UK for many years. They provide rest centres, psycho-social support, climate-related emergency response, and evacuation assistance to help individuals recover from traumatic events.

As the Director of Crisis Response and Community Resilience, you will have the opportunity to make a difference in the most challenging crises people face. You will work with government agencies, emergency services, local authorities, and the third sector to respond to crises and support communities in building resilience. We employ expert staff and volunteers from the police, fire service, armed forces, and NHS to respond quickly to crises. Their scale, expertise, and resources allow them to provide a coordinated large-scale response with rapid support to communities working alongside statutory organisations. Their national and international expertise is unique, and we are looking for a leader who can galvanize organisations and teams to benefit our communities. These roles only appear once in our careers.

This role will see you provide leadership in two principal areas; ensuring they have the necessary resources to meet potential needs and overseeing the development of strategic resilience. Climate change is causing destructive weather that damages UK infrastructure. There is a need to respond and prepare with partners to reduce disasters' impact on communities.

You must be able to hit the ground running in both key areas. As well as an excellent track record in emergency response and planning, you must bring extensive knowledge of the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 and a sophisticated understanding of current UK resilience systems from the inside. The experience of working with dedicated and highly trained volunteers will be a distinct asset. This is an organisation-wide leadership job, and you should be able to demonstrate how you can develop and broaden the British Red Cross' role as the civil responder of the first resort with both regional and central government partners.

At the British Red Cross, they are looking for the right people to help them support millions of people affected by crisis in the UK. They want their team to reflect the diversity of the communities that they serve, offering equal opportunities to everyone, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, socio-economic status or neurodiversity. We particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in British Red Cross’s workforce. These include people from Black and Global Majority backgrounds, disabled people and LGBTQI+ people.
